Le Service du travail obligatoire (STO), instauré en février 1943 par le gouvernement de Vichy, envoie des centaines de milliers de jeunes hommes travailler, contre leur gré, en Allemagne. Justin, vingt ans, est l'un de ces requis du STO. Pour échapper au travail forcé, il s'estropie en se versant de l'huile de machine dans un oil. En vain. Mais, après dix mois passés dans le camp d'Hennigsdorf, il réussit à s'évader et rejoint Paris.
À la Libération, il reprend son métier de garçon de café, et retrouve Renée, l'amour de sa vie.
